German is NOT easy to learn. Knowing a few cognates does not help you deal with noun and adjective declensions, or familiar and formal verb forms, neither of which English speakers have ever seen. Making light of learning this language is seriously misleading.
Right. I think having a west Germanic familiarity definitely helps but English has since abandoned a lot of the rules Standard German has so it’s a little bit of an uphill battle to learn the things mentioned in your comment.
Edit: then again it’s not as hard as, say, Russian but it’s not as easy as Italian or Spanish either and those languages aren’t “easy” per se either. All languages present some sort of challenge

I learn German almost every day, so I can speak for myself – German isn’t so hard to learn. It’s just more hard than English
@@DCinchi You can be encouraging without being unrealistic. Just say that although some aspects of the language can be challenging, having so many cognates between German and English makes learning easier. That’s fact, and encouragement.
