In this clip I share a Maltese sentence with 2 speakers of Arabic (one Tunisian and one Egyptian) to see how well they understand it. Then I break down the Maltese sentence and compare it to Arabic.
The word “Jien” reminds me a lot of the french word “Je”
Yeah, the etymology I found for the word says that it comes from Arabic anā, but I said to some of the participants that it seems to me like it might have also been influenced by Sicilian iu/jù. Words do sometimes have a dual etymology like that.
Maltese, Arabic with Latin alphabet.
And a lot of Sicilian & Italian words (though not in this sentence).
I wonder if there are common Maltese names that are Arabic derived
I’m a non native speaker of Arabic and found Maltese really easy to decipher when I read a few sample passages. Really interesting to see an Arabic language in Latin script
