In this clip I talk about the development of the Maltese language, which began as an Arabic dialect, but has been heavily influenced by Italian and Sicilian.

Me: “Are you an Italian dialect.”
Maltese: “Well, yes, but actually no.”

    as a moraccan
i can confirm that when i first heard maltese i thought a moroccan from the north was talking
and i undrstand 90% of it
cause northan moroccans understand arabic and frensh and spanish and english
not all of them ofc , and that why maltese make sense for us , cause it was latinized , just like us by two latin language .

Being close in its pronunciation to the Maghrebic dialect, rather than the Levantine dialect, I have found the speech somewhat difficult to understand. However, while reading the language, I have found it much easier to recognise the words originating from Arabic.

  • @BobTheHatKing says:

Time to put it to test…!

  • Anonymous says:

“Which is now a separate language”, like all Arabic languages

  • @mattsingh_ says:

Hi from Malta, a lot of the rideshare drivers here are North African and the ones that I’ve asked have mostly said that they could understand it to a large extent

  • @Tolbens says:

Good job about the language!!! Once I’d watched a documentary about the origin of Maltese people and from the DNA tests had been prooven that their closest relatives were the Phoenicians.
