We translators have the advantage of taking some time to check words or segments before finishing a project. Interpreters need to do things faster whether they work simultaneous or contineously. I think that’s a bit harder than translation and it’s okay that people can understand the differences. It’s quite common to see even on TV how people call translators to interpreters.
I am more kind of translator but I would like to study for interpreter as well.
Then I would suggest you keep these points in mind, and talk to an interpreter too!
Re. The introvert translator vs extrovert interpreter.
Tbh, interpreters – perhaps surprisingly – are often pretty introverted too.
Don’t forget: even though we “speak” a lot as part of our jobs, we have very little luxury in choosing what we say. We are essentially machines.
We can play around with the occasional frilly adjective here or the silky gerund there, but other than that, we’re meant to play it very straight.
It’s perhaps indicative that at the UN, the one “Core Competency” – as they’re called – that interpreters are NOT meant to demonstrate is that of CREATIVITY😂
So, to all you introverts out there, fear not, you’ll fit in just fine in the interpretation booth too!
