I live in Pennsylvania, and very rarely do people use the word muppet outside of the hit movie series. I have, however, heard it a few times in my 28 years in this commonwealth in the context mentioned above.
Muppet is the British equivalent of bufflehead.
Are you in west, central or eastern PA? I’M in west PA, north Allegheny County, grew up in Westmoreland county, never ever heard of a bufflehead. Im wondering if it’s regional within the state or a thing that only really rural areas know about.
@thinker646 I’m in Carbon county on the eastern side. But, yeah, my one uncle said it like once or twice. But, that’s about it. We have some Welsh in the family as Welsh is a pretty popular heritage around here. So, that’s probably why I’ve heard someone being called a “muppet” around here.

Duck OR insult. A muppet is a cute puppetlike thing in a movie. Never heard it used as an insult.
