    As a kid, I thought my Wisconsin aunt was a foreigner, so different was her accent from even my northern Indiana relatives. I grew up further southeast in Indiana where there’s a Kentucky influence.

    In northern Wisconsin or up you can go your entire life without ever saying “yes”, only ever saying “ja”. Yes, that’s how German it is. It’s not even a shortened “yeah”, but a straight up “ja”
